'The Necklace of Lineage' is one of a dozen new works by Dunedin artist Fleur Yorston to be displayed at Toi o Tahuna Fine Art Gallery later this month.
Dunedin artist Fleur Yorston returns to Toi o Tahuna Fine Art Gallery on Friday with new works that blend New Zealand icons with Australian, British, Irish and Thai heritage.

Gallery owner Mark Moran said there was an obvious Kiwiana reference to Ms Yorston's work but it also had subtle influences from Asian art, culture and body adornment. Jewellery provided continuity between past and present in Ms Yorston's art, he said.

"It acts as a metaphor for the memento, the wearer and the transcendental."

Ms Yorston's latest works are a combination of paintings and pigments inkjet prints, printed on Hahnemuhle fine art inkjet paper. Images for prints are created by digital manipulation and photocopying.

Mr Moran said Ms Yorston had moved the image while photocopying to give it spontaneous and distortional effects, allowing for a physicality to remain in the works.

"The process is important, machine and physical, as it bridges a gap between painting and the contemporary digital age."

• The show will run from September 26 until October 21 with a preview on Friday, September 25, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
