Lack of interest in operation surprises Fly by Wire inventor

The inventor of Fly By Wire says he is surprised by the muted response from either upcoming or established operators in taking up the "rocket" adventure tourism ride in the Wakatipu.

Last August, Fly By Wire Queenstown Ltd announced it would reopen on November 30 with a new lessee, but the date passed because parties did not come on board in time.

Fly By Wire director Neil Harrap, of Wellington, spoke to the Queenstown Times from a working holiday in Utah.

Mr Harrap said he was still open to a lessee or buyer of the activity, "someone who is young and ambitious . . . with a flair for a unique ride".

He said he was receiving plenty of emails from groups and individuals who wanted to book the ride. However, the base on Arnold Middleton's Queenstown Hill Station, near Tuckers beach, was without an operator.

"I've been talking with two parties, but neither are moving very quickly and they may come to nothing.

I've had one conversation with either of them in the last few months."

Mr Harrap said there were patents for the activity in 20 countries.
