Auckland artist Tony Lane will attend the launch of his new exhibition "Light & Shade" at the Nadene Milne Gallery on Saturday night.

The function will also see the launch of the gallery's new free arts quarterly magazine NMG, a 16-page full-colour magazine available from the gallery, the Jacks Point clubhouse, and to its database of clients.

About a dozen new and earlier pieces will be displayed in Mr Lane's first collection at the Arrowtown gallery since November last year.

Gallery manager Leah Seifert said Mr Lane was very interested in art history and took simple everyday objects and historical influences and placed them in a modern context.

With the new pieces, he attempted to be more direct with his subjects and he had tried to emphasise the objectness of the new paintings through the use of canvas and also the texture and process of applying the paint.

"His paintings are intelligent, magical and informed by art history and they connect us to a larger European and Western cultural context - something that is often overlooked in the search for our nationalistic identity."

Gallery owner Nadene Milne said NMG magazine would feature up and coming artists and their exhibitions in venues around the Wakatipu.

"There's an opportunity to talk about arts and culture-based events in the region and nationally. There's a ready audience for that information and it's a way for the gallery to communicate without being diluted."

• Tony Lane: "Light & Shade" opens at the at the Nadene Milne Gallery on Saturday, October 17 at 7pm.
