Locals slowest to get on board for high school reunion

A "casual" reunion planned for 1980s Wakatipu High School pupils next weekend already has up to 100 people set to reminisce, with Queenstowners the slowest to get on board.

Ira Mitchell-Kirk, now of Christchurch, is the driving force behind the reunion, which has one set event next Saturday night, but otherwise leaves ex-pupils to organise celebrations to their own taste.

The 1986 school graduate got the idea to organise a catch-up after she received offers of help from old friends after last February's Christchurch earthquake.

"I had friends contact me from around the world saying, 'What can we do?' and my immediate response was to try and help get children out of Christchurch, with people offering money for flights and houses in Auckland and Queenstown," Ms Mitchell-Kirk said.

In the months that followed, however, people kept commenting it had been too long since they had caught up with one another and so she decided to organise a reunion, she said.

While ex-pupils were scattered all over the world, many had "come home to nest" but, despite the large number again living in the resort, they had been the slowest to respond, Ms Mitchell-Kirk said.

"If more people want to come along, that's great as there's really no registration or tickets."

Anyone interested in taking part in the reunion can visit Ms Mitchell-Kirk's website, www.art-nz.com, contact her on 027-4489-9327 or visit the Wakatipu High School reunion Facebook page.
