A carbon fibre sports boat named Magic Trick, built by Milton Bloomfield, took line honours in the Donald Hay Classic Yacht Race on Saturday.

The trophy was won on handicap by the second yacht home, Piracy, which finished mopre than half an hour behind Magic Trick.

It is the 31st year the Wakatipu Yacht Club has held the race from Kingston to Queenstown, marking the the voyage on a basic raft by explorer Donald Hay in 1859.

The race is open to all trailer and keel yachts of at least 5.2m.

Thirty-four boats competed in this year's race.

Bloomfield, along with crew Bruce Adams and Matt Sherwood, completed the course in 3hr 44min 32sec.

Piracy, skippered by Vince Williams, of Christchurch, finished in 4:21:34.

Bloomfield said conditions were good, with a strong wind all the way.

"The wind was variable . . . and we had to concentrate for the whole time, but that's part of the challenge," he said.

Magic Trick can reach speeds of over 18.5 knots and weighs just 250kg.

Designed for speed, the sports boats do not have cabins, and the crew lean out over the sides, supported by trapezes.
