New base for youth trust

The Kahu Youth Trust has secured a new home for its community operation in Wanaka.

Cinema Paradiso owners Callum and Andrea McLeod have offered the community youth group a base.

The Kahu Youth Trust has been looking for a community-based venue for young people for several years.

Despite pleas to the Wanaka Community Board and the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the community-grant funded trust could not find support in its quest for a venue.

A vacant commercial space previously rented by an electrical company at Cinema Paradiso has now been made available.

Youth worker Richard Elvey will look after the basement venue and also use part of the space as an office.

Kahu Youth Trust members Eddie Spearing, Kate Bariletti, Mr Elvey and outgoing youth worker Tarn Felton are on the lookout for funds and material to decorate the new location.

The group expect to be in their new venue by mid-January and hope the space will be open to Wanaka youth by February.

The lease for the underground site is guaranteed until 2010 and will be paid for by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
