No concert because of lack of funding

Kingston residents and visitors won't get the chance to celebrate a fifth year of the annual Kingstock concert because of a lack of funding from the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The annual outdoor music concert had run for the past four years on the first Sunday in February with help from the council.

The council had previously helped with payment for the performers as well as the Portaloo system.

However, Kingstock organiser Peter Gibson said he was told by the council it had not included the concert in its annual budget, forcing the event to be cancelled.

"QLDC usually have helped us ... This year they haven't got a budget for it."

While he was "disappointed" the council had pulled funding for the event, it seemed it had "cut back on everything", Mr Gibson said.

"It's sad really because it had been very popular and we have had a bit of feedback and everyone is disappointed," he said.

On hearing the council could not help out with funding, he asked if it would cover any losses the concert made if it was independently funded.

"We never heard back."

Proceeds from the concert, which would have fallen on Waitangi weekend next year, had previously been given to the Kingston Emergency Centre and this year the Kingston and Districts Historical Society had been set to benefit.

The concert usually drew 300-plus visitors to the township at $10 a head for the day's entertainment and had generated about $11,000 since its inception.

"We've had buses come."

"It's a chance for families to get out and take time off."

Mr Gibson and his wife Margaret would try again next year to host the concert and would approach the council for assistance.
