A young Queenstown fighter was singled out among his peers at a Muay Thai show last weekend, receiving the award for the ‘most beautiful Thai technique’ of the night.

Hurto Gym’s George Worswick, 12, beat Noah Crawford (Kruchain) in a unanimous win after three two-minute rounds — his second fight and second win — and was subsequently presented with his trophy and a $200 cash prize by the Thai ambassador at the Lower Hutt event.

Coach Rob Horrocks says George has been training with him for about two years, and he’s "really proud" his technique was recognised, which is a credit to the work he puts in.

"It’s really cool that he won it over all of the adults, and some more experienced and pro-am fighters.

"He’s shown a full range of Muay Thai and a good understanding of the game," Horrocks says.

George says the sport’s a massive part of his life, and lots of things he does revolve around it, "so I try to be as good as I can be".

"Going into the fight, I didn’t believe my technique was that perfect, nor could I execute all of my training into an actual fight, but the officials thought otherwise, which means a lot to me and the people [and] gym around me."

Horrocks says he’s now pencilled George in for a fight in November against a young fighter from Auckland’s Smac Gym.

Meantime, two other Hurto fighters came away with wins in Lower Hutt last Saturday night — Corban Woodward beat Oliver Bathgate (Kruchain) and Marcel Main beat Caleb Ferguson (Kruchain), both by unanimous decision after three two-minute rounds, taking Hurto to a 16-fight winning streak since February.
