For most of us, one winter a year is enough.

However, American Tyler Kitchin (28), originally from Michigan, is in his ninth consecutive winter.

Dividing his time between Queenstown and Steamboat Springs, in Colorado, Mr Kitchin generally skis about 150 days a year.

The rest of the time he spends as a ski boot fitter, a job at which he has become expert.

In Queenstown, Mr Kitchin works from Browns Ski Shop, while in Colorado he manages the ski and boot department of a large sports equipment store.

"I basically learnt my craft on the job, from an experienced boot fitter in Colorado.

"It's a very specific skill and profession and one that takes a lot of practice and passion.

"Boots are far more important than anything else you're going to buy.

"They should be your No1 priority ahead of skis and any other ski gear.

"Let's put it this way: I believe there's no other piece of sporting equipment that impacts an athlete's performance as much as the boot does on how you ski.

''It's all about the boot."

Mr Kitchin said regardless of brand, it came down to the right fit for customers.

"Just as an interesting aside, I've noticed that Aussies and Kiwis tend to have a wide, square foot.

''Don't ask me what the science is behind that."

Once the boot has been selected, Mr Kitchin said the first thing to do was make a custom insole.

"This is what really makes the boot yours".

"We can modify the boot to accommodate a changing foot, including injuries and ailments such as bunions, or to alter the way you want to ski."

Mr Kitchin said his favourite ski accessory was the "Boot Heater", ideal for the skier seeking a little bit of luxury on the slopes.

"The boot heater is custom fit into the sole of your ski boot and runs off rechargeable batteries attached to the outside of the boot.

''You don't even notice it's there.

"It keeps your feet toasty warm all day long, so no frozen toes at the end of the day.

"They're really popular in the States where it's colder, but I think it's catching on here, too.

"It's like having heated leather seats in your car.

"Once you've tried it there's no going back."
