"Bring the defibrillator!" was Cromwell rugby player Buck Buchanan's advice ahead of today's golden oldies rugby match between Cromwell and Wanaka.

The Upper Clutha Wrinkly Rams will take on the Victoria Gold team at 1pm at the Wanaka Showgrounds and some celebrity spectators are expected on the sidelines to take in the action.

Several high-profile rugby identities - Murray Webb, Jamie Joseph, Marc Ellis, Leicester Rutledge, John Timu, Brian Lochore and David Latta - are in Wanaka for a Lions' black-tie fundraising dinner tonight and Wrinkly Rams captain Mike O'Connor said some of them would attend the game.

Despite the distinguished audience, there had been little training in the build-up to the big match.

"We tried to train once and everyone turned up at different times over a two-hour period. The memory span's going and the hearing is gone," Mr O'Connor said.

Mr Buchanan's team was simply up for "a bit of a run round and a few beers and to hurt yourself I suppose".

Up for grabs for the winning team was likely to be an improvised "loo shield", a toilet seat on which Mr O'Connor would gather celebrity signatures.
