Parents move on tracks

Lake Hayes Estate parents have made it their mission to raise up to $75,000 for bike facilities in the middle of the settlement.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council originally planned to include a bike track but the council discovered it could not afford it, mother of two Jackie Rule said.

She and other parents decided to get the ball rolling and raise the $75,000 needed for an asphalt cycle path, a BMX track and some jumps.

Since they began the project, several small businesses and community groups had offered to help where they could.

The Queenstown Mountain Bike Club had offered to draw up track plans and provide some members to work on the BMX track, Mrs Rule said.

The plan was to raise a third of the sum needed, apply for funding for another third and then approach the council for help on the last third she said.

"It would be great for this community and it wouldn't just be restricted to Lake Hayes Estate children - people would come from all around to use it."

The fundraising will begin this weekend at Lakes Hayes Estate with the Party In The Park, taking place on Sunday from noon to 4pm.

The day will include a raffle, silent auction with donated prizes of helicopter rides, Skyline gondola passes, Earnslaw passes and spray tans she said.

There will also be a bouncy castle, 13 market stalls and a Speight's caravan Three children's bikes will be given away.
