Arrowtown Primary School pupils were treated to a private concert by the New Zealand String Quartet on Thursday last week, when the music4life programme visited Queenstown for the first time.

The programme is a community initiative which was jointly developed by the New Zealand String Quartet and HSBC Bank, and has been travelling the length and breadth of the country to perform for schools since 2008.

Pupils enjoyed a performance by the internationally acclaimed string quartet and listened as the players discussed their instruments and answered questions about their musicianship.

Elizabeth Kerr, manager of the quartet, said the musicians and the children got a lot out of the concert, which was complemented by a display of artworks travelling with the programme.

Senior teacher Kathleen Brentwood said the children were lucky to have the quartet visit for the day.

"We have children who are particularly talented at music and art, so it was very rewarding as a teacher to see those children challenged by the bringing together of these two creative processes."
