Wakatipu High School pupils have been confronted with a car involved in a fatal crash, a "booze bus" and funeral directors as part of a touring road crash exhibition.

Senior Constable and youth education officer Garry Milford, of Central Otago, was at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday educating pupils about the consequences of "unwise" choices such as drink-driving, and the life experiences of emergency services personnel.

Pupils were getting a taste of reality, he said.

"They've seen a mock crash with some student actors, been on the booze bus, seen a car which was involved in a fatal crash, visited the funeral directors, [and] we've got some professional car racing people here talking about modified vehicles and the importance of joining a club if you want to do that." A crash survivor was also sharing his experiences.

Pupils wanted to make good choices but the exhibition was about "empowering them to keep this in the forefront of their minds", Snr Const Milford said.
