The motors were running as more than 100 motorbike enthusiasts took to the highways of Central Otago in the first Four Lakes Rally on Saturday.

Four Lakes Rally organisers Rod Bowler and Mark Dick came up with the idea for the charity rally as a way of giving back to St John ambulance staff for the voluntary work they put in at roadside emergencies.

The pair raised more than $2000 in funds for St John Wanaka.

Four Lakes Rally participant Mike Bishop said the event was superb.

"It was great being out there on the bike with everyone cruising the highways.

"We were turning heads everywhere."

Rally participants enjoyed near perfect weather conditions on Saturday as they rode the lakeside roads of Central Otago, visiting Lake Hawea, Lake Dunstan and Lake Hayes, before returning via the Crown Range Rd to Lake Wanaka.

The round trip took about five hours.

Mr Bowler said they hoped to make the charity rally an annual event.
