Skills aid in quake relief

Young Wakatipu leaders raised $2559 for food parcels to Christchurch citizens as part of an ongoing challenge to hone their project management skills, with the help of Queenstown mentors.

The apprentice leadership summit involved Deborah Yoan, Caitlin Laurenson, Sinead Logan, Tom Roughan and Michael Bennett, as team "Forcity"; and Yelia Schnelle, Jessica Thomson, Catrona Anderson, Jared Campbell and Caleb Dawson-Swale, as team "Intellectual Zing".

They have competed in weekly challenges set by mentors over the past five weeks.

In late March, guest speaker Sue van Schreven, Orphans Aid International director, challenged the teams to test their ingenuity and organise their own fundraising efforts in aid of Christchurch.

Forcity won the challenge, raising $1768 - $618 from an online auction of donated goods, $550 from a collection outside New World Wakatipu and $600 from raffles, collecting and busking.

Intellectual Zing raised $791 from a sausage sizzle on the Queenstown Village Green, a street collection and selling donated vouchers.

Intellectual Zing's proposal for a Queenstown Young Professionals (QYP) social networking function was selected by the QYP committee, this week. Forcity members must now work with their former rivals under the Intellectual Zing banner to host a "speed-business-dating" function within the next six weeks.

Summit Youth workers Jacqui Moir and Nathan Baxter interviewed separate candidates from years 11 to 13 this week for a dozen positions on a six-week formal cookery course, in association with the Crowne Plaza hotel, from May 17. Trainees will work towards a grand final, where they will prepare a three-course dinner and service for 80 to 90 relatives, friends and guests.

The candidate deemed to show the most promise and who desires a culinary career will be awarded a scholarship for a level three cookery course at Otago Polytechnic.
