The first of three special events at the Remarkables Market in Queenstown will be held tomorrow, in conjunction with Earth Hour day.
Remarkables Park special projects executive Olivia Porter said Remarkables Market would help raise awareness for Earth Hour and encourage people to think about what changes they could make in their lives that would benefit the planet.
"We'll be promoting small changes, such as buying local produce and products from markets to reduce food and production miles and encouraging simple actions, such as walking or riding to school or work, unplugging appliances when not in use, washing with cold water and recycling," Miss Porter said.
There would also be giveaways tomorrow, including Remarkables Market Envirosax bags, and demonstrations from Solar Peak and Dr Compost, a service funded by the Queenstown Lakes District Council, showing Bokashi composting buckets.
The event would be supported by Ziptrek Ecotours, Ricoh and Wormworx, which would be giving people handy hints - for example, "Don't treat your soil like dirt."
Miss Porter said next Saturday the inaugural "design a scarf" competition would be held, aiming to get shoppers creative and kitted out with a scarf before winter.
"By definition, a scarf is a length of fabric worn around the head or neck, so entries can be a combination of anything from a variety of colours, knitted, woven, crocheted, using felt, wool, recycled products, cotton, pompoms, feathers, or whatever suits you," Miss Porter said.
Scarves would be judged by a local Queenstown fashion icon, the winner receiving $100 of vouchers to spend at the market.
An Easter Bunny Hunt for children will be held at the Remarkables Market on April 23.
The Remarkables Market runs every Saturday, from 8am to 1pm, until April 30.
