Suspects sought in Saxton funeral beating

Police are investigating an alleged group beating, which has blighted the aftermath of the funeral for Haast rescue pilot Morgan Saxton, at Wanaka Airport, last week.

A 27-year-old Wanaka man sought treatment for a broken nose, concussion, and severe abrasions, allegedly dished out to him around midnight after the funeral for Mr Saxton, last Wednesday.

Constable Bruce McLean said the man was "given a good hiding".

Police are looking for a group of male assailants, but have "no idea" where the possible suspects are from.

Investigations were at a "raw" stage.

"A lot of people were there and a lot of people were very, very drunk," Const McLean said.

The victim was assaulted "a number of times", and claimed he was hit by many people.

However, the assaulted man was "also extremely drunk" and the evidence he had provided to police was inconclusive, Const McLean said.

Mr Saxton's funeral at the Alpine Fighter Collection hangar at Wanaka Airport, last Wednesday, drew a crowd of more than a thousand people.

Mr Morgan (31) died when his helicopter crashed into Lake Wanaka during a routine flight from Haast on November 1.
