Skye Thompson and Josh Perry pulled a proverbial rabbit from the hat to win the Queenstown Primary School's talent competition.

The pair's comedy and magic show, performed in front of the school, teachers and parents last Friday, beat a Mamma Mia-inspired duet from runners-up Grace Kennedy and Lily Brabent (both 8), and a song from Oliver by Jonty Climo and Callum Judkins (both 10), who were third.

Principal John Western said he was delighted with the quality of the performances.

"The quality and variety was incredible. We had pupils playing different musical instruments, singing, dancing, acting. It was incredibly hard to pick a winner," he said.

The competition was held over three weeks, with more than 100 pupils auditioning.

About 30 acts reached the semifinals and 13 made the final.
