Third resort 'turnaround'

A 32-year-old Australian man was stopped by New Zealand Customs at Queenstown Airport on Monday in the third "immigration turnaround" at Queenstown Airport in a week.

The man was detained in the Queenstown police station overnight and sent back across the Tasman yesterday.

On Saturday, a 29-year-old Australian waitress travelling with her partner on a ski holiday was sent back to Sydney by Customs after being found at the airport with prescription drugs belonging to someone else.

The woman also spent the night in the police station cell before returning to Australia at her own expense.

Another man was "turned around" last week, Sergeant Mark Gill, of Queenstown, said yesterday.

He said the visitors did not face criminal charges, but they were "not fit and proper to gain access in the circumstances they arrived".

When asked for details, police referred inquiries to Customs.

A Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment spokeswoman said yesterday Immigration NZ was unable to comment without a privacy waiver from the individuals concerned.

"They did not meet entry requirements," she said.
