Some traditions are worth keeping and yesterday, members of St Peter's Anglican Church in Queenstown shared one that is particularly popular.
Shrove Tuesday, or pancake Tuesday, is a Church tradition of serving pancakes a day before the start of Lent.
Originating in England, Shrove Tuesday dates back to the 12th century and marks the start of the 40-day fasting ritual.
On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, parishioners would have used eggs, flour and butter to make pancakes - some even marking the day with a pancake race.
Yesterday, the Rev David Coles, Joy Coles and some parishioners shared a pancake lunch on the corner of Church St.
Those who received pancakes were invited to contribute a gold coin for the Christchurch Earthquake Fund, as today is the first anniversary of the February 22 quake.
The St Peter's bell will toll at 12.51pm to mark the anniversary and Ash Wednesday services will be held today at 10am and 7.30pm.
