Vintage rugby event earns charity $20,000

Last month's World Vintage Rugby Carnival in Queenstown raised more than $20,000 for Cure Kids.

Carnival director Peter McDermott, of Auckland-based Vintage Sport & Leisure (VSL), said more than 26 teams, including 10 from Australia and one each from Norfolk Island, Samoa and Canada, took part in the event.

Included in the fundraisers during the week-long event was a silent auction held at the Queenstown Events Centre as part of the finale dinner, where a signed All Black World Cup shirt and a signed photo of the late Jonah Lomu went under the hammer.

"At every event we hold we try to raise money for a sporting or children's charity. To raise $20,000 amongst 500 participants was a fantastic effort'' Mr McDermott said.

Cure Kids chief executive Frances Benge said she was "thrilled'' Cure Kids was selected as the recipient charity.

"We're extremely thankful to the team at VSL for their incredible support.

"We believe everyone deserves a healthy childhood and when it comes to finding cures, every cent raised makes a difference - every dollar will help fund the cure.''
