Watersports progress

Supporters of plans for a new watersports facility on the Lake Wanaka foreshore got two pieces of good news yesterday.

First, the Queenstown Lakes District Council adopted its Wanaka lakefront reserves management plan, enabling the council to lease lakeshore land for a building.

And a Queenstown law firm specialising in planning issues, GTodd Law, has offered free legal advice to the trust proposing the building.

Just one member of the public spoke against the plan at yesterday's council meeting in Luggate.

Landscape architect Alan Cutler said the Wanaka Rowing Club represented a small minority of the Wanaka population and the plan was a ''short-sighted'' approach to landscape management.

The chairwoman of the hearing panel which drafted the new plan, Rachel Brown, told the meeting it strengthened protection of the lakeshore.

While it identified a zone for a watersports building, it did not specify where it should go.

''This is a decision that can still be majorly influenced by the community.''
