An independent review of the Wye Creek fire in March last year, in which more than 700ha of farm and Department of Conservation land was razed, is being released today by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

In mid-March, hot embers were whipped up by high winds near Wye Creek on Lake Wakatipu, about 18km south of Frankton, creating a 2km roadside fire front before jumping State Highway 6 and spreading over more than 700ha across Loch Linnhe Station and into Doc land, burning its way towards the Hector Range summit.

The fire, which cost more than $700,000 to fight and included the use of 11 helicopters, three 10-tonne diggers and more than 70 people, was most likely caused by by two passing steam traction engines.

Queenstown Lakes District Council principal rural fire officer Gordon Bailey said the review, by the National Rural Fire Authority, was mainly to enable council to plan better for larger fires and to review resources and responsibilities.

All the review recommendations had been implemented or were being implemented, he said in a statement.
