Australian holiday-maker victim of fatal smash

Police have confirmed the woman who died in a head-on collision near Queenstown on Monday was 49-year-old Australian Susan Maree Cullen.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, said Ms Cullen’s family arrived yesterday after being advised of the fatality on Monday evening. She died at the scene following the crash on Gibbston Highway, near the Crown Range turnoff on State Highway 6. The driver of that vehicle remained in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital, while the 23-year-old male and female occupants of the other vehicle involved remained in a stable condition in Dunedin.

Snr Sgt Enoka was unable to confirm the nationalities of the three survivors of the crash, but said they were all holidaying in New Zealand.

Inquiries were ongoing and police had not yet spoken to the others involved.

"Our priority was to get their medical treatment sorted first.

"When they are all able to be spoken to and interviewed that is when charges will be made.

"We are thankful to the eye-witnesses that were able to give their account of what they saw, in what would be very emotional circumstances for a member of the public to come across,"  Snr Sgt Enoka said.
