In an online industry briefing yesterday, business development head Adam Rossetto and Queenstown launch head Frederick Conquer revealed details about the micro-mobility launch.
Beam plans to operate its scooters from virtual docking stations hosted by local hoteliers, and run from the far edge of Sunshine Bay and Fernhill to Frankton, before Lower Shotover.
Mr Rossetto said Beam was looking to expand beyond this area later.
He also revealed rides would cost 65c per minute, plus a $1 unlocking fee.
In parts of the Auckland and Wellington CBD, competing operators Lime and Flamingo charge the same unlock fee plus 45c-55c per minute.
Mr Conquer said the Beam Saturn, the model destined for Queenstown, was tested on the trails between Frankton and Queenstown and handled mild off-road conditions as well as icy surfaces.
Beam would not shut down over winter but the automatically enforced speed limits would be lowered.
The scooters were fitted with indicators, safety lights and individual number plates for road use.
In response to concerns about catering to tourists over residents, Beam said it wanted to provide locals rates, connected to a library card or similar.
