A historic Otago town is set to get a brush with The Rolling Stones.

English singer-songwriter Chris Jagger (69), the younger brother of the rock band's frontman Mick, will perform at a fundraising concert in Arrowtown on March 7.

Two musicians who tour with the Stones - saxophonist Tim Ries and backup singer Bernard Fowler - will also play the town's Athenaeum Hall.

The trio are supporting British ''boogie woogie'' pianist Ben Waters, who played in Arrowtown last year and has shared a stage with music legends such as Jools Holland, Jerry Lee Lewis, Shakin' Stevens and Mick Hucknall.

A fifth of the $125 ticket price will go to the Queenstown Trails Trust, of which Queenstown philanthropist Sir Eion Edgar is patron.

''To have Chris Jagger, it is unbelievable,'' Sir Eion said.

''And Tim and Bernard from The Rolling Stones ... it will be fantastic and a lot of fun.''

Concert organiser Mike Norris, of Akaroa, has promised to add a second night if sales go well.

The line-up came about after an impromptu meeting in Las Vegas.

Mr Norris was invited by Waters to see the Stones but the gig was canned as Mick Jagger had laryngitis.

The rest of the band decided to play at a local club and Mr Norris was introduced to Ries.

''I said to Tim, 'Would you consider coming to New Zealand in March and see if you can get Bernard to come, too?'

''They are really excited about coming here,'' he said.

Mr Norris will also be tasked with organising some outdoor expeditions for Jagger - who is a fan of ''the wild''.

The Arrowtown crowd for Waters' concert last year - a fundraiser for the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group - was great, Mr Norris said.

''We found Arrowtown so appreciative.''

Sir Eion, whose support was crucial in bringing the show to Arrowtown, did not rule out making the concert an annual event.
