A co-working space for "doers and dreamers" has opened in Frankton.

The Misfits Workshop, launched on May 2, has been set up by brothers Jonty and Max Norton for creators, makers and innovators.

It sits in a newly-renovated building in what Jonty calls the "film yard" shared by their parents’ company, Norty QT Film Rentals, and the Queenstown Camera Company, in Margaret Pl.

Their aim is to provide a hub for Queenstown’s creative community to work, network, hold events and "launch their next big idea", he says.

"We needed to get out of the home office and the garage and have a place to launch our own businesses, and help others do the same."

The two-level building has desks, a boardroom, workshop space, a video conferencing andpodcast room, and a production room for film production staff.

It also has a kitchen, shower and bathrooms, and free coffee.

It operates on a monthly membership system, although it also offers hot desking on a daily basis.

Jonty says take-up has been excellent, with the upper floor desk space already about 85% full.

"We’ve got a mix of remote workers, freelancers, those who already run established businesses and those who’re just starting out.

"We’re starting to build a community around it.

"We’ve got digital marketers, we’ve got content production, we’ve got developers, and everyone’s helping each other out in one way or another, which is really cool.

"There is a creative industry at the heart, but we have a mixture of businesses working out of here.

"It’s probably a little bit less corporate, hence the name Misfits."

They plan to run frequent business-focused events for the community at the hub — two weeks ago it hosted a ‘how to launch a successful side hustle’ workshop.
