A weeping willow in Queenstown’s Earnslaw Park is being cut down today.

Two people suffered minor injuries on Friday after strong winds caused a large branch to fall from the 60- to 80-year-old tree.

A Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesman said the tree had been assessed in September and showed no signs of internal decay or the presence of wood-digesting fungi.

The council would continue to visually examine the rest of the trees in Earnslaw Park and further tests would be conducted if internal decay was indicated, he said.
