The car that exploded in a suburban Queenstown park with a man inside on Tuesday night will be removed from the site today.

Police said in a media statement that although formal identification had yet to be completed, "all indications'' were Christchurch man Kurt Sturgess was in the station wagon.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown police, said the site in Jardine Park, Kelvin Heights, remained cordoned off and under guard overnight.

But police and ESR scientists would complete their examination by this afternoon, after which Mr Sturgess' remains and the car would be removed.

A specialist fire investigator examined the scene yesterday.
