The driver of the vehicle is believed to be a woman, but Det Miller could not comment on the details around what happened in the lead up to the crash because "police are still trying to piece that together''.

He described the child's injuries as "serious''.

The incident happened in a quiet residential area, on a long stretch of road.

Earlier the ODT was incorrectly told the patient was flown to Dunedin Hospital.
