Liquor outlet closing 3 days

Queenstown's  Gorge Rd Liquor King outlet will be closed for three days next month after serving an intoxicated woman in March.

The police applied to suspend the off-licence for Lion Liquor Retail Ltd, which operates the Liquor King outlets, and suspend the manager's certificate for Hannah Macartney.

It is understood the woman was served by another staff member at the store and then attempted to drive but was stopped by police, arrested in the car park and charged with drink-driving.

Dates for the store's closure were to be confirmed, while Ms Macartney, who is not at present working in the industry, will have her manager's certificate suspended for 28 days.

Judge Kevin Kelly, from the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority, which met to discuss this and other matters in Queenstown last week, said the incident was serious and while the woman's consumption of alcohol was not Ms Macartney's fault, it was by ``the grace of God'' the police were able to apprehend the driver.

``This driver could have driven out of the car park and killed somebody.''

Reuben van der Sluys' manager's certificate, due to expire on September 2, will be suspended for 28 days after a breach of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act during the Rugby World Cup at Bannockburn last year was admitted.
