Man sitting in car punched in the face

A man was punched in the face as he sat in a car in central Queenstown this morning.

Sergeant Steve Watt said the assault occurred about 3.40am while the vehicle was sitting at the lights at Stanley and Ballarat Sts.

"A man ran up from the street, reached through the rear window and punched him in the face.

"We suspect the occupants said something to the male, and he's responded violently.

"Needless to say that's an over-reaction.''

The victim reported the assault to a police officer a short time later when the car was stopped at a random check point.

"He had blood all over his face.''

The offender had not been located, but police were looking at CCTV coverage of the area, Sgt Watt said.
