St John staff treat a motorcyclist at the scene of an accident on the Coronet Peak Rd, near Queenstown, yesterday.

The German tourist, aged 59, received moderate arm and leg injuries and was taken to Southland Hospital in Invercargill.

Senior Constable Darren Cranfield, of Queenstown, said the man was one of a group of tourists travelling around New Zealand for a couple of weeks on motorbikes.

"It appears he has come around the corner, hit loose shingle, and fallen off the bike ... It doesn’t appear to be speed-related."

Emergency services received the call to the crash at 11.43am and traffic was backed up on either side of the accident scene for about 30 minutes.
