New bus stops: consultation, investigation

There will be ongoing public consultation for more than a year on the location of new bus stops and shelters across the Wakatipu.

Queenstown Lakes District Council transport strategy manager Tony Pickard said in his report to Thursday’s full council meeting, the Otago Regional Council had identified two sites for stops/shelters at Centennial Avenue, in Arrowtown; and one each at Robertson St, Frankton; Willow Place, Kelvin Heights; and Stalker Rd and Jones Ave, both in Shotover Country.

Additional sites were also being investigated in a "second tranche" while a review of existing facilities was also being done.

Proposed new stops and shelters required formal consultation — Mr Pickard’s report recommended a panel be established to hear any objections and make decisions under delegated authority.

New shelters would include seats, bike racks and ski racks "as standard".

The cost of a new, installed shelter was about $20,000 — additional funding would be required if footpath improvements were also needed.

Comments

How can it possibly cost $20,000 -or a quarter of that - to build a simple bus shelter.

You can buy a shed this size from Mitre 10 for less than $1000.
