The old headmaster’s house in central Queenstown is being moved to a new home.

Part of it was due to be relocated early this morning as part of the construction of an arterial road between Melbourne and Henry Sts. It will become the new home of a family in Gore.

Built on its Ballarat St site in 1938, about the same time several buildings were built for the newly opened Queenstown District High School, it was home to several of the school’s headmasters — the first, a Mr McDonald.

The house was disconnected from all services and its chimneys were dismantled before its roof was sawn off.

It will be transported in two halves — the first, today and the second half on Tuesday.

Following the removal of the house, Ka Huanui a Tahuna, will continue to clear the site for the construction of retaining walls, which will begin early next year.
