Queenstown may be shaping up as the country's major centre for pole dancing.

Last Friday, the resort hosted the fitness craze's premier competition, Miss Pole Dance NZ.

Fifteen women took part in the competition, which was last held in Auckland in 2013.

The owner of Queenstown Pole Studio, Raha Sangsari, who came third in 2011, said the resort appeared to be becoming the competition's new home.

''All the girls were asking, 'Is it going to happen again next year?' and, hopefully, yes, it will.''

Commenting on the competitors' displays at the Queenstown Memorial Centre, Sangsari said the standard had ''picked up quite a lot in the last few years''.

The performance by winner Oliva Andersen, from Christchurch's Altitude Pole Studio, was ''pretty awesome''.

''She had grace and strength and flexibility, and just everything flowed beautifully.''

Bridget Monro, from Wellington's Body Electric Pole Show, was second, and Trillian, from Taihape's Vertically Awesome Health and Fitness, finished third.

Queenstown Pole Studio dancers Lili Heinz, Lucille Lebowksi and Elektra K also turned heads.
