Screentime pulls plug on Luma plan

The company behind a Queenstown light show has abandoned a proposal to create a long-term home for the attraction in One Mile Reserve.

After the plug was pulled on the hugely-popular Luma lights show, which ran for nearly a decade in the Queenstown Gardens, in 2024, the ‘Luma Enchanted’ forest walk operated at Queenstown’s Kiwi Park for several months last year.

Subsequently, Luma Enchanted Ltd applied to the Department of Conservation (DoC) for a 30-year lease of a forested, 3700sq m site in One Mile Reserve, near the town centre.

However, a DoC spokeswoman confirms the application, which attracted one submission, was withdrawn at the company’s request last month.

Luma Enchanted Ltd’s parent company, production house Screentime New Zealand — known for television series such as A Remarkable Place to Die and MasterChef New Zealand — said in the application the attraction would operate daily and year-round on the sloping site, which sits between the One Mile roundabout and Thompson St.

It had been proposed for visitors to follow a loop trail through the forest to view the light show and art installations.

Screentime NZ chief executive Philly de Lacey has not responded to multiple requests by Mountain Scene for comment.
