Serious injuries after roller upends

A man was flown to Dunedin Hospital late yesterday afternoon after the construction vehicle he was operating rolled about 20m down a bank on  SH6.

A St John spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the incident, about 10km south of the Kelvin Heights turn-off on a section of SH6 undergoing road works, at 3.46pm.

Fire crews from Kingston, Queenstown and Frankton attended, along with the police and St John.

Traffic in both directions was stopped before an Otago Regional Air Rescue Helicopter, dispatched from Dunedin, landed on the highway about 4.45pm.

Emergency services personnel used "lines" to pull the man, who had been operating a roller, back up the steep incline. He was flown to Dunedin Hospital with what are understood to be serious injuries.
