A Queenstown school pupil who is in isolation with a measles infection visited several places in the resort before becoming aware of their illness.
Health authorities are warning those exposed to the disease could notice symptoms from today.
Southern District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Marion Poore said the pupil developed symptoms on Monday which were confirmed as measles on Wednesday.
The pupil was in isolation as the measles were infectious for a 10 day period ending tomorrow.
The pupil had had contact with a significant number of people in Queenstown before feeling ill.
It usually took between 10 and 14 days for someone who had caught measles to develop symptoms.
Anyone else infected could start to develop symptoms from today, Dr Poore said.
The symptoms start with fever, a runny nose, a cough, red eyes and a sore throat before a rash spreads across the body.
The pupil visited Seoul Garden Restaurant in Queenstown between October 5 and 9, took a bus from Lake Hayes Estate and downtown Queenstown at 8.50am on October 6, visited Crew Stylists in Queenstown on October 5 and went to Queenstown Medical Centre on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Dr Poore said if people developed measles symptoms, they should stay home and phone their doctor.
They could also phone Healthline on 0800 611-116 and tell staff they might have been in contact with a confirmed measles case.
