Sleeping teen crashed into wall

A Queenstown teen driver crashed a vehicle into a stone wall and high-voltage power box after falling asleep at the wheel, police say.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson said the 17-year-old male was driving along Gibbston Highway (SH6) with two passengers at 4.30am on Friday when the accident happened.

He said the driver had travelled from Lake Tekapo - a three- to four-hour journey.

He reminded all drivers to take care on the roads.

''Fatigue can be a real issue, especially on long journeys.

''Drivers should take regular stops - this could have been a lot worse.''
