Veteran Queenstown architect Murray Cockburn, who first brought the coin game, spoofing, to the resort, has won his first New Zealand title.

Held in Wellington after the All Blacks’ loss to the Springboks, Cockburn — who’s won the Fijian and Australian champs in ’98 and 2018, respectively — beat two two-time world champs, ex-All Black Murray Mexted and ex-All Blacks manager Mike Banks, and five other world champs.

They included Brett Annan, who’s pictured, right, after presenting the ‘In Zid Tinkard’ to Cockburn, who’s known in the spoofing fraternity as ‘spoofer Murray’.

About 60 spoofers competed including four or five from Australia. Local spoofers Mark Dickson and Simon Davies got through to the quarterfinals, while Cockburn’s son David made the semis.

At the recent world spoofing champs in Sydney, five Queenstown spoofers also took part.

Four made the quarterfinals and Greg Rooke was one point away from the final after losing a spoof-off in the semis.

Meanwhile, local spoofers are invited to Queenstown’s Brazz on the second Tuesday of the month, from 6pm — starting next week.

"None of us take ourselves terribly seriously, but we do enjoy good food, good wine and having a lot of fun," Cockburn says.
