A new bylaw could be introduced to cover tattooists and skin piercers in Queenstown Lakes.

At last week's community and services committee meeting, regulatory manager Lee Webster presented a report to inform the committee members of the existing bylaws programmed for review over the next 12 months.

However, it was also up to the committee to consider introducing other bylaws - for example, one covering businesses where there was potential for blood-borne infections.

``We have regulations for hairdressers, which is relatively straightforward.

``If you look to potential issues with blood-borne infections, that's something we might look at, or not,'' Mr Webster said.

Cr Val Miller - who is also a doctor - supported the idea.

``We have a lot of people who will come here and then they get drunk and do things - it can have long-term implications.''

The committee was told the Dunedin City Council had a similar bylaw, introduced in 2005 and replaced last June. It covered beauty therapists as well as tattooists and skin piercers and aimed to prevent the transference of communicable diseases, including hepatitis B and C, HIV/Aids and bacterial skin infections.

Mr Webster said it was possible any potential bylaw in the Queenstown Lakes district would include beauty therapy.

Council officers first looked at that type of bylaw almost 10 years ago and given the growth in the area, with more businesses offering those services, it might be time to review whether one was required.

``We'd need to link in with the Public Health units about what they may check, or not. If it's being covered elsewhere, great, and if it's not, that's a consideration that we can look at, given the numbers of outlets that we have and wanting to make sure that our community's safe, basically,'' Mr Webster said.
