Having trained hard for the Coast to Coast’s mountain run race, only to not get off the waitlist, Queenstown’s Regan ‘The Sheriff’ Pearce struck gold (and silver and bronze) witha replacement event this month.

The 47-year-old, who’s competed seven times in Coast to Coast, including last year’s 30.5km mountain run, instead entered the huge Masters Games in Whanganui after finding it had a 15km trail run event.

Pearce also decided to enter the 10km cross country and 5km road race as they were each a day apart.

He then proceeded to win gold in his 45-49 age group in the trail run and, also in his age category, silver in the cross country and bronze in the road race.

And for good measure he also picked up gold in the mini golf.

Pearce says he’s grateful to his employer B&A Digging, Barnett’s Scaffolding, Bayshore Builders and Simon Yarrell Insurance Services for assisting with costs.

"The best way to repay them for their support was to do my absolute best in each event, and personally set myself the goal of trying to win a medal in each.

"A good friend told me, it’s not what you’re capable of, it’s what you’re willing to do.

"I was willing to go and do, and make the most of something else when the something I was hoping to do didn’t happen."
