Direct flights between New Zealand's capital and its adventure capital will be resumed by Jetstar next year.

The airline axed its flights between Wellington and Queenstown in 2013, but they will be reinstated three times a week from March 27.

Jetstar will operate an Airbus A320 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, departing Wellington at 8.35am and leaving Queenstown at 10.25am.

Jetstar New Zealand head Daniel Banens said the airline had worked closely with airports at both destinations to identify customer demand and was looking forward to providing a low-fare option on the route in time for next year's ski season.

''Queenstown is hugely popular with our customers and has experienced significant growth over the past few years.

''We're sure Wellingtonians will welcome having a choice of airline to the southern tourist resort and we also expect the service to be popular with Central Otago travellers visiting the capital for business or events.''

Queenstown Airport chief executive Colin Keel welcomed the return of the service.

''The direct jet service will give both business and leisure customers more flexibility and choice when travelling between Queenstown and Wellington,'' he said.

It would be Jetstar's second domestic route from Queenstown. The other is to Auckland.
