Science show visiting the South

Hands-on science fun will be offered to Otago school pupils over the next month as the Science Roadshow visits the South again.

Ten towns in the region will be visited by the roadshow, encouraging youngsters to take a hands-on approach to the many displays and to actively try many of the experiments on offer.

The roadshow features two live demonstrations and more than 60 hands-on interactive exhibits.

This year's shows feature "Sparks, Arcs and Gherkins" and "The Scientific Pantry".

The interactive exhibits include themes ranging from light, heat and sound through to health and wellbeing.

Roadshow director Ian Kennedy said the "Sparks" demonstration examined electricity with some shocking results. A human circuit, capacitor discharge, electrocuted gherkin, electromagnetic bungy chair and 100,000 volts from a coil all combined to leave the audience "buzzing".

The "Pantry" involved a range of demonstrations from the kitchen, which could be safely reproduced at home.

"Fancy drinks, clever chemistry and a rather nifty trick with a hard-boiled egg has made this show one of the most popular in the roadshow's repertoire."

Visitors can explore the interactive exhibits, measuring their muscle mass and water proportion, experiencing hurricanes and whispering to friends far across the hall.

Established 20 years ago, the roadshow has been touring nationally since 1990. Last year, it attracted more than 50,000 pupils from 700 schools.
