Snow, gales forecast

The South is expected to shiver tonight and tomorrow with squally snow showers predicted to near sea level.

The MetService said the Catlins could be hardest hit, with 10cm to 15cm of snow possibly accumulating down to 400m there overnight and tomorrow morning.

Southwest gales of up to 100km near the coast are also expected, bringing windchill temperatures to around -10degC for a time.

The snow showers and wind should slowly ease from tomorrow afternoon.

A severe weather warning issued by the MetService yesterday said snow was also likely to affect many urban and rural roads in Otago and Southland.
