Members of Timaru Boys' Brigade bought a skateboard, scooter and roller skates which they donated to The Christmas Angel Project.
Under the project, which is run by Family Works, the presents are passed on to a family in need.
Boys' Brigade leader Fiona Blissett said she took the boys shopping to choose the presents.
The boys, ranging in age from 11 to 16, had complete control over what was bought.
Miss Blissett said they had "even thought of safety gear", which she had been impressed by.
She said money was raised to buy the gifts, as part of their fundraising badge, from a variety of projects including lawn mowing, gardening and cutting firewood.
"They've decided what [they will be] doing for next year's gifts, too."
