South Canterbury won this fixture last year and, with Jenelle Lockyer away with the New Zealand team playing a test against Australia in Tasmania, and Mary Mealings not available, it has opened the door for Kay Austin and Alison Mackie to step up to this level.

On Sunday the representative team travelled to Ashburton to play for the Hight Trophy. Despite being ahead at the end of the first round and the four teams winning their fours in the afternoon session, South Canterbury could not keep up the momentum. Ashburton made ground in the second round of singles and drew away in the pairs allowing South Canterbury only one win. Kevin Anngow and Jenelle Lockyer had the best results, winning five of their six games. This was Jenelle’s last rep outing before leaving for Tasmania later in the week to represent New Zealand in a test series against Australia. — Carol Dawson, SC Indoor Bowls
