Flat and fast: Nathan Lindsay, of Te Anau, driving Unforgiven, was placed second in the B grade marathon at Lake Tekapo on Saturday.
A bad weather forecast halved the number of boats entered in Saturday's Lake Tekapo Boat Marathon, with competitors braving a mix of rough and fine weather.

Organiser Damon Odey, of Timaru, said 12 boats from Invercargill to Christchurch took part in the marathon and nominated speed competitions, with the fastest boats racing over a 100km course at the southern end of the lake.

Racing began at 1pm with boats getting ‘‘quite a bit of air'' in choppy conditions, he said. However, the weather broke and became ‘‘primo'' by the end of the racing.

Competitors were comfortably inside the Lake Tekapo Tavern for a prizegiving when the snowfall began, he said.

The event was the third of five rounds in the series, with the next at Lake Waihola, south of Dunedin, on July 5.
