About 180 people had a muddy good time in the Clutha Mud Trudge at the weekend.

Teams and individuals ploughed through a 5.5km outdoor course filled with mud-filled obstacles in Balclutha on Saturday.

Event organiser Rachel Jenkinson said about 180 people took part in the fundraising event and she had received much positive feedback this year.

``That cold wind kicked in, but everybody got stuck in - and once they got moving, they warmed up.''

She made a point of speaking to people who took part in last year's event to see how it compared.

``It was good having less distance between the obstacles and ... additional areas for mud.''

The turnout was about 100 fewer than for last year's event.

She suspected the lower turnout was because similar mud events were being held elsewhere around the same time, Mrs Jenkinson said.

She wanted to hold next year's Mud Trudge later in the year so it did not conflict with other events, she said.

Also, this year's winter was colder, so people appeared less keen on getting wet and dirty.

The overall prize for best dressed went to the ``Filthy Fathers'', who dazzled onlookers in their Elvis Presley costumes.

``Everybody got into the spirit of it and that always makes for a more enjoyable day when everybody gets in behind it [dressing up].''

The highly commended prize went to a group dressed as grandmothers.

``They'd gone all out with their hair rollers and cardies.''

The about $8000 raised by the event will go to Balclutha St John to help with operational costs.
